In Kokose village and surrounding areas, the main occupation for many residents is agriculture, particularly coffee farming, and coffee production is a significant economic activity and a primary source of income for local farmers.
The region’s conducive climate, high altitude, and fertile volcanic soil make it ideal for growing high-quality coffee.
Apart from coffee farming, other agricultural activities such as the cultivation of cereals, vegetables, and fruits also contribute to the local economy. Livestock rearing, including cattle, sheep, and goats, is another common occupation among rural communities in Sidamo.
Additionally, some residents engage in small-scale trade, handicrafts, and services related to agriculture and tourism—baskets and other items of value which they may sell by the side of the road and down the main streets of town.
The Sidamo people have a rich cultural heritage, and traditional practices such as weaving, pottery, and craftsmanship are part of the local economy as well.
