Origin: Colombia
Region: Tolima, Huila
Altitude: 1300 – 2000 MASL
Cultivars: Castillo & Caturra
Process: Washed
Our Aztec Gold is sourced from smallholders in Colombia’s most famous coffee-growing regions. These farmers typically use the traditional Fully Washed method of processing. Cherry is selectively handpicked and then pulped, usually on the farm. After pulping, coffee is fermented in tanks for 26 to 36 hours. Then, parchment is washed in clean water and laid on parabolic beds to sundry for up to 20 days.

Value for money this is hands down my favourite coffee from Butterworths that I keep coming back to. It’s perfect as a double espresso, or americano enjoyed at any time of the day – well balanced and full of flavour. I’m almost out so I really hope it comes back in stock soon!

I initially tried a variety taster pack and the columbian aztec gold was my favourite (also great value), used with a V60 dripper. A friend got me into decent coffee during lockdown and when returning to the office, the Kenco blend just didn’t hit the spot. Butterworths are local to me, so the click and collect service is perfect. The next progression on my coffee journey is to grind my own?

This is such a brilliant review, thank you so much for taking the time to leave it! I am glad the Aztec Gold is you’re favourite, Colombian origins really do tickle my fancy! Grinding your own beans is definitely the next step! There are tons of home grinders on the market, we do a great manual one on our website that Rob swears by! Don’t hesitate to get in touch when you are ready to take on the next part of the coffee journey… we are always here to help!

This is my absolute favourite from the Butterworth & Son range! Really hits the spot and especially appealing for the chocolatey notes. It’s just around the corner from my home so click and collect means I can keep stocked up, get through this one in no time (but that’s good, I do like my coffee after all!). Find myself disappointed when I go out for coffee if it’s not from the Butterworth & Sons range, I have spoilt myself at home clearly!

This is such a brilliant review, thank you so much Amanda… seriously, we may frame this one! Our Gold range really is a special one, every single one hits the spot. The Aztec gold’s chocolatey notes are especially pronounced and ultimately it works on every brew method. I do relate to your struggle though… once you start making exceptional coffee at home its hard to settle for anything less!
Thanks again for taking the time to leave such an awesome review!

The Aztec Gold has such a rich blend of flavours. I prefer a light roast, on the acidic side. I don’t know exactly the roast of this bean but it is intense without tasting dark or bitter, and I love it. First taste was a more than pleasant surprise!

This is a great coffee. I hadn’t appreciated how much we loved it until for the first time in years, we ran out of Aztec Gold. I hadn’t ordered in time and I had to buy a bag of a commercial brand beans from the supermarket. We immediately noticed the difference but not in a good way! Luckily the Butterworth delivery arrived later that day. I don’t like waste but we couldn’t finish the consumer brand beans.

On balance my favourite, using it for filter coffee, beautifully rounded flavour. Grinding my own beans makes things even better!

Popped into a cafe/bookshop in Lavenham quite by chance and had a latte, which was worthy of comment. The owner said it was Butterworth’s Aztec Gold so as soon as I was back home I ordered a kilo of beans and I haven’t looked back since. Lovely smooth coffee – my sense of smell has been 97% less than it was pre-covid but I still get the scent of chocolate rising from the bag. Lovely stuff – I’m happy that I’ve found my coffee for life.
